President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has once again backed Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) Director General Martha Chizuma in the fight against corruption in the country.

Speaking during a media briefing held at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe on Monday night Chakwera asked Malawians to allow Chizuma work independently.

In his statement, Chakwera said as a law-abiding President, he does not interfere in the operations of the ACB.

In this regard, he said he did not expect anyone to interfere in the functions of the bureau.

The President described himself as a fighter and stressed that he strongly believes in Chizuma’s capabilities such that he appointed her to the position amid opposition in the National Assembly where a committee initially rejected her.

Commenting on the infighting among Attorney General, the Director of Public Prosecutions and Anti-Corruption Bureau Director General Chakwera said if they three do not improve the way they work with each other, he will be compelled to change the people.

Chakwera said he has already engaged the Ministry of Justice on the issue and they have given an assurance that things will improve.

“There is a saying that if you can’t change the people, change the people,” said Chakwera.
