Central Region Immigration authorities in Lilongwe have nabbed two foreign nationals for illegal stay.

The two are identified as David Chimalukwe aged 28 a Nigerian national and Ibrahim Katongole aged 27 a Ugandan national.

The publicist for Regional Immigration Office, Centre, Pasqually Zulu, said the dual were arrested in Lilongwe by permit compliance and enforcement team during passport inspection excise which proved that their days in Malawi have expired.

The two were taken to Lilongwe Magistrates Court for contravening section 21 (1) of the Immigration act Cap 15:03 of laws of Malawi.

The Court ordered David Chimalukwe, a Nigerian, to pay a K25,000 fine and recommended his immediate deportation, while the verdict for Ibrahim Kitongole a Ugandan is on the 15 May 2022.

Police say both are under Immigration custody at Maula Prison in Lilongwe.

Meanwhile, the Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services is reminding all foreign nationals residing in Malawi to visit any nearest Immigration office in case of doubt about their residential status. The department says failure to comply attracts serious consequences which include deportation.
