Like a soldier cornered in the bloody battlefields of Ukraine, a an experienced veteran husband of Lusaka has raised his hands in the air and surrendered his marriage of 28 years to the court to dismantle according to the law.
Appearing before Magistrate Bertha Zulu, Grandpa Topsy Phiri, of Ibex Hill who has a 28-year old daughter and a 19-year old son from his marriage with Grace Sosa now of Kamwala South who is also 55-years old, said he no longer wanted his marriage as he had lost love for the wife of his youth and wanted to become a bachelor again, albeit at an advanced age.
Meanwhile, Grandma Grace objected to Grandpa Phiri’s call on the court to end their marriage saying she still loved her husband despite their being on separation.
However, what they took to build in 28 years, it took the Court only minutes to break permanently as Magistrate Zulu granted Phiri the divorce he so much wanted.
The court also ordered the couple to sell the housing flat they co-own on the Copperbelt from which the wife will get 30% and the rest for the husband but that they should be no sharing of household goods as each party had obviously bought their own pots and pans in the time they had been on separation.
