The Catholic Church in Malawi has commenced a process to laicize Father Thomas Muhosha who was convicted of taking part in the killing of MacDonald Masambuka, a person with albinism in 2018.

With laicization, a priest is forbidden from ministering as he is reduced to a lay person.

Episcopal Conference of Malawi (ECM) Secretary General Father Henry Saindi said when a priest is convicted of a crime and has to serve a jail term, his Bishop requests the Pope to remove his clerical state.

Muhosha confessed to have murdered an albino man in court.

Sentencing of Muhosha together with the 11 accomplices is scheduled for June 27, 2022.
