The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) paraded in court cabinet lockers which it is alleging that they were mis-procured by inflating the price at K2.9 million each at the Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services between 2009 and 2010.

One of the Bureau’s witnesses, Dr. Stephen Chalimba, Deputy Director of Testing Services at the Malawi Bureau of Standards, told the court that the lockers’ specimen which was tested failed the thickness test and passed fire test.

He told the senior resident magistrate’s court that a product does not comply in its entirety to standards if it fails one.

This is a case in which businessman, Abdul Karim Batatawala and three others are being accused of being involved in an alleged fraudulent procurement of uniforms and other accessories such as the lockers at the immigration department.
