Councillor for Blantyre City Soche East Ward Leonard Chimbanga has criticized Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Member of Parliament for Mulanje South Yusuf Nthenda for supporting the Tonse Alliance government of President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera to adjust upwards retirement age for judges in the country.

On Tuesday, Parliament passed the Courts Amendment Bill which among others seeks to increase the retirement age of Judges from 65 to 70 years.

The Bill received massive resistance from the Opposition bench with other MPs saying the same should be the case with other Civil servants.

But this was not the case with MP Nthenda who supported the bill from the start of debate.

This did not go down well with Chimbanga who belongs to former President Peter Mutharika’s camp. He blasted Nthenda over the matter.

“I hear DPP legislator Mthenda of Nankhumwa Camp rendered his support to the MCP agenda of extending the retirement age of judges to 70 years. It is interesting to note that KN camp has a great working relationship with MCP and not their own Party agenda.

“I am sure this will yield more ex-parte injunctions against the Party and ACB should they want to get to the bottom of the Covid 19 Allowance gate against those who ate the money,” wrote Chimbanga.

Meanwhile, MP Nthenda is yet to comment on the matter.

DPP is currently divided in Parliament into two camps of Kondwani Nankhumwa and that of Dr. George Chaponda.

The development follows leader of opposition battle between the two sides.

The case is currently in court.
