The Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has condemned the shooting of the fitness trainer Chikondi Makawa at Gateway Mall in the capital Lilongwe on Sunday.

Makawa was shot dead by unknown police officer after a fracas following a failure by the deceased to pay for bottled water he purchased.

The shooting scandal has attracted mixed reactions with many asking qualifications from the law enforcers on the matter.

Joining the calls, MHRC has said it will institute an indepth investigation on the matter.

“The Commission is on notice of two incidents of shooting, one in Limbe Blantyre and the other in Lilongwe. One of the case involves a Policeman and the other a business person.

“The Commission wishes to reiterate its commitment of protecting and promoting human rights in the country. In this regard, the Commission is currently establishing facts around both cases and will release it’s findings,” reads in part the statement.

The body of Makawa is currently at Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) mortuary in the capital Lilongwe.
