The Police in Lilongwe have arrested a 35 year old woman for allegedly abusing her 11 year old daughter suspected of stealing cooked egg plants.

Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has confirmed of the development in a statement released on Thursday made available to faceofmalawi.

“The Commission was on notice of an alleged case of child abuse involving a woman who was alleged to have abused a child on suspicion of theft in Lilongwe. The Commission investigated the matter and have the following facts:

“The incident happened on Wednesday, 17th August 2022 at Zinthenga Village T/A Kalumbu – Kamphata area in Lilongwe,” reads in part the statement.

Added the statement: “The perpetrator, a 35 year old woman has been arrested by Nathenje police.

“The victim , a standard three (3) pupil at Mataka primary school, aged 11 was complaining of general body pains and has since been taken to hospital for a thorough medical examination.

“Moving forward, the Commission will continue to engage the Police as well as the Social Welfare Office to ensure the matter is handled with the “best interest of the child” in mind.”
