A married woman and mother of six, who was sentenced to death by hanging for allegedly dumping her newly-born baby in a toilet after giving birth, has been set free after the Court of Appeal established that the cause of death was uncertain.

Between March 30 and April 1, 2017, Nelis Nkhoma allegedly killed her newly-born baby in Lundazi.

Evidence before court was that sometime in 2016, Nkhoma became pregnant and hid the pregnancy from her husband and sister.

During trial, Nkhoma said she fell ill and had an epileptic attack during which she gave birth and the baby fell into the pit-latrine.
