The Minister of Local Government Hon. Prof. Blessings Chinsinga on Friday unveiled new fleet of three brand new refuse collection trucks at Blantyre City Council.

He said while the procurement of the trucks demonstrates the kind of fiscal autonomy which the National Decentralisation Policy envisages, it also shows the Council’s ability to put into good use the resources it mobilises from the residents.

Chinsinga said with the new trucks in place, he expects that city markets shall always be clean, thereby stimulating local productivity and economic growth.

“Central business districts, peri-urban areas and townships should be clean and hygienic in order to make them habitable and attract investors who in turn can stimulate local economic development. These refuse collection trucks will, therefore, be used by the City Council to realise this,” he said.

According to Blantyre City Mayor Wild Ndipo, the Council has procured the trucks at a cost of MK538.12 Million.

He said that the City Council has now six road worthy refuse collection vehicles.
