The Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) has said, it will use the US$150 million secured from the World Bank to start connecting electricity to customers by the end of December 2022.
According Kitty Chingota Public Relations Manager for ESCOM, their Corporation in conjunction with Malawi Electricity Access Project (MEAP) will be connecting 60, 000 customers each year in order to fill the gap of applicants from 2017.
In addition to that, Chingota disclosed financial challenges as the source of inadequate resources hence the Corporation requests K400, 000 to add up on the contributions applicants paid of K100, 000 each.
Peter Matope Chairperson for concerned prospective ESCOM customers at Mawonga trading Centre in Thyolo, said they have been waiting for the electricity connections since 2017.
ESCOM has been receiving connection fee from different applicants in the country since 2017 and electricity are yet to be connected.
