Police in Mzimba have arrested two men, William Lungu, 20 and Steven Milanzi, 23 for allegedly killing 45-year-old Lapken Masamba who was an employee of Electricity Supply Commission of Malawi (ESCOM).

Spokesperson for Mzimba Police, Peter Botha said on November 6, 2022 around 21:00 hours Lungu and Milanzi, ambushed Masamba near Mzimba FDH bank as the deceased was going home from work.

Botha said the two suspects grabbed Masamba and hit him with a heavy stone in the head.

“They robbed him of two mobile smart phones and ran away. Masamba could not get up to proceed to his house which was about 500 metres away,” said Botha.

He said Police night patrol team found Masamba unconscious and took him to Mzimba District Hospital where after gaining consciousness was able to narrate his ordeal.

Masamba was referred to Mzuzu Central Hospital the following day before being transferred to Mwaiwathu Hospital in Blantyre where he died a week after later.

Botha said medical report revealed that Masamba died due to head injuries secondary to assault.

“Police have since recovered the two mobile phones. Lungu and Milanzi are already serving an 18 months’ jail term each at Mzimba Prison after they were convicted of theft which they committed in October, 2022.”

The two will appear in court soon to answer murder charges which is contrary to Section 209 of the Penal Code.
