The Evangelical Association of Malawi (EAM) has described the inquiry report on circumstances around the arrest of Anti-corruption Bureau (ACB) Director, Martha Chizuma, as something that aims at undermining authority of the ACB chief and diverting people’s attention away from high profile cases.
In a statement issued signed by EAM chairman Zac Kawalala, details that Chizuma’s arrest substiantially validates the notion that there are some elements to frustrate the fight against corruption in the country.
The statement has also dared president Chakwera to maintain his position that he pardoned the ACB director on the controversial leaked audio as the inquiry report has focused on it than events surrounding her arrest.
“Significantly, the report does not clearly establish who knew what, and when, who ordered the arrest of the DG, apart from stating that critical members of the Executive knew about the arrest. The question remains, “who exactly in the Executive arm was aware of the impending arrest?
“Instead, the report has spent significant amounts of space dwelling on the conduct of the ACB-DG around the audio, a matter which the State President already addressed previously. Strangely enough, neither the Commission, nor anyone in the administration has ever asked the questions: who recorded the audio? Who leaked the audio? Who commissioned the recording of the audio? All that is now established are those talking in the audio, and the audio being a private conversation. Apart from asking the ACB-DG to appear before the Commission, in all fairness, did the other person in the leaked audio appear before the Commission?,” queried Kawalala in the statement.
