Consumers in Nsanje district are outraged over the sudden and sharp increase in the price of a 50 kilogram bag of maize.

According to information sourced by this publication, a 50 kg bag of maize is being sold at K30, 000 from K25, 000.

Residents in the district, attributed the development to lack of adequate maize in Agricultural Development and Marketing Corporation (ADMARC) depots.

One of the residents Rose Mchacha called on government to consider supplying enough maize to ADMARC depots for them to survive.

“For the sake of our survival, we are not safe,” Mchacha said.

According to Benard Mphepo, a Center for Social Concern (CSC) Programs Officer Responsible for Economic Justice, Malawians are struggling to purchase maize because vendors are selling at a higher prices around the country.
