The Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) party has announced plans to hold its convention in April or early May of this year.

The announcement was made by party President Kamzengeni Enoch Chihana (EKC) at a rally held on Saturday at the Baka school ground in Karonga Boma.

Chihana emphasized the importance of a strong grassroots organization structure for the party’s survival and longevity, and stated that it can only be strengthened through open, transparent, and inclusive elections.

Chihana also spoke about the party’s commitment to accountability and transparency, stating that state resources must be delivered to the electorate, and any party that fails to do so has no place in modern politics.

He reminded Malawians that AFORD, along with the United Democratic Front (UDF) and other freedom fighters, fought for democracy, economic liberation, and unity in 1993, and any party that seeks to take away these gains through repression, anti-democracy, and intolerance of dissenting views has no place in modern politics.

Chihana also emphasized that if voted into power in 2025, AFORD is committed to promoting unity, socioeconomic development, youth and women empowerment, and other issues important to Malawians.

At the rally, three councillors from other political parties joined AFORD.

Chihana also gave awards to some of the founders of AFORD in Karonga, including Mwambungu, Chief Karonga, and Green Mwamondwe, in recognition of their sacrifices for the cause of democracy and freedom in the country.
