The World Food Programme (WFP) announced that it will resume its lean season food response program in Balaka district, which provides monetary assistance to beneficiaries to purchase food.
The program had been temporarily closed for one month due to issues with local chiefs demanding money from recipients.
District Commissioner Darwin Mngoli confirmed the program’s reintroduction and emphasized the importance of following the program’s goals without any malpractice.
Senior Chief Inkosi Chanthunya praised the WFP’s decision, noting that the suspension could have had negative impacts on the community.
He also urged local chiefs to adhere to the program’s objectives and warned that any misconduct would result in legal action.
