Heavy rains caused flash floods on Wednesday morning, affecting 150 off-campus students at Mzuzu University.
According to Mzuni Student Union Council President, Greenson Mbotwa, 51 of these students are in dire need of assistance as their food and belongings have been submerged in water.
Mbotwa also noted that this number may increase as reports from other affected areas continue to come in.
He expressed concern that the students may also be at risk of cholera outbreak due to the flooding washing away fecal matter from pit latrines.
The university management has taken action by providing temporary housing for some of the affected students on campus.
These students are scheduled to sit for their end-of-semester exams starting next Monday.
