The Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has announced that it has begun an investigation into the arrest of Martha Chizuma, the Director of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB).

The investigation comes following a complaint from Chizuma that her rights were violated during her arrest and that the Presidential Commission of Inquiry Report, which was released on January 3, 2023, did not disclose any human rights violations that occurred during the arrest.

In a statement released on Thursday, MHRC Executive Secretary Habiba Osman stated that the Commission has also received complaints from other stakeholders urging the commission to conduct an independent investigation into the matter.

The public is being asked to provide any relevant information that may assist the commission in its investigation.

The arrest of Chizuma, a high-profile figure in the fight against corruption in Malawi, has sparked widespread concern and condemnation.

The MHRC’s investigation will seek to uncover the truth behind the events that led to Chizuma’s arrest and whether any human rights violations occurred.
