Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) President Nevers Mumba has described the arrest of Patriotic Front (PF) Presidential Candidates Chishimba Kambwili as unnecessary.

Kambwili was arrested on Monday for the offence of Unlawful Assembly contrary to section 74 read together with section 75 of the Penal Code Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.

He has been jointly charged with Charles Kakula who is already in Police custody facing the same offence.
It is alleged that the two whilst acting together with other unknown persons did Unlawfully assemble causing other persons to reasonably fear for the breach of public peace.

Writing on his official facebook page Mumba described the arrest as unnecessary.

“I just arrived back in the country and I have just been briefed about the charges made against Honourable Chishimba Kambwili.

“I believe that this is an unfortunate and unnecessary arrest, and will only serve to reverse the good strides we have so far made as a nation in returning to normalcy, respect for the rule of law, and the unnecessary targeting of political opponents,” wrote Mumba.

He added: “For the record, we urge the Police Service to accord him Police Bond and to not to take us back in reverse to things we have moved on from. Let us forge ahead, together, towards the Zambia we want.”

Meanwhile, Kambwili is still in police cell.
