The Tonse Alliance government has said it will engage the US government over the statement it issued on Wednesday concerning the country’s resolve in battling corruption and matters in court to do with Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) Director General Martha Chizuma.

According to a statement signed by government spokesperson Moses Kunkuyu, Capital Hill will use diplomatic channels to address the issues with the US government and its envoy.

“This will be done in the spirit of mutual respect, without compromising the duty of Government to protect the sovereignty of Malawi and the independence of domestic public institutions and their officials from foreign interference, as well as in the quest for continued cooperation in the development of Malawi and its people,” it reads in part the statement.

On Wednesday, the US government expressed concern over Chizuma’s ongoing torture by the Tonse Alliance government.
The statement followed an application by Attorney General Thabo Chakaka Nyirenda challenging the reinstatement of Chizuma.

Meanwhile, High Court Judge Mike Tembo has dismissed the application with costs.
