In a shocking incident that took place in Nsanje, Malawi, four elderly women from the village of Mayere under the jurisdiction of Traditional Authority Mbenje were brutally attacked by angry relatives of a deceased individual.

The attackers accused the women of practicing witchcraft and putting a spell on the deceased.

According to Edison Njembe, the District Gender Officer, two of the women sustained serious injuries as a result of the assault.

The altercation took place at a graveyard, where the women were forced to dig the grave under the orders of the attackers.

The police were eventually called to the scene and rescued the women, who were taken to Sorgin Health Centre for treatment.

Njembe stated that they are working with the law enforcement authorities to ensure that the perpetrators of this heinous crime face justice.
