At least 22 Malawians have been affected by the earthquake that struck Turkey on February 6, 2023, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson John Kabaghe said so far there has been no injury or casualty reported adding that most of the affected Malawians are students.

However, he said at this point, the Ministry has not yet received any information about Malawians living in Syria who have been affected by the earthquake.

Said Kabaghe: “At this point, 22 Malawians, mostly students, have reported that they have been affected by the earthquake in Turkey. Buildings they were living in have developed cracks and they are now living in temporary shelters. Thankfully, there have been no casualties so far.”

Kabaghe further said government is assessing the situation of the affected Malawians and holding consultations with relevant stakeholders here in Malawi to assist the affected persons.

International media reports that the 7.8 magnitude earthquake has killed more than 34 000 people and injured tens of thousands others in Turkey and Syria.
