The Court in Lilongwe has set March 2, 2023 as the date it will sentence former minister of information Henry Mussa and former director of information Gideon Munthali in an abuse of office case.

The two were on October 25, 2022 convicted of stealing government computers and a generator set.

Today High Court Judge Patrick Chirwa, who continues to handle the case in his former capacity as a Chief Resident Magistrate heard oral submissions on sentencing from both the State and the defence.

In its submission, the State appealed to the court that the two, whose bails were revoked on conviction, should be slapped with custodial sentences.

Lawyer representing Mussa, Kalekeni Kaphale, pleaded with the court to be lenient with his client on the basis that he is a first-time offender and that he already paid over K7 million and returned some items to government.

Meanwhile, the two have been sent back to Maula Prison pending their sentencing on Thursday next week.
