An 11-year-old boy Wonderful Kalimwayi of Chimkoko Village in Traditional Authority Kayembe in Dowa has died after being trapped by a fallen tree inside his house also known as ‘gowelo’.
Police Publicist for Mponela, Macpatson Msadala said Kalimwayi met his fate on February 25, around 6 pm.
Msadala said the father of the deceased told police that his son was alone in the boys’ quarter when heavy winds accompanied by heavy rains started.
Later, a bluegum tree that was close to the house fell and trapped Kalimwayi.
The matter was reported to Chisepo Police Unit where police officers visited the scene and confirmed the tragedy.
A postmortem conducted by a medical practitioner at Chisepo Heath Centre established the cause of death as suffocation secondary to the pressure of the tree on his neck.
Since the onset of the rains, many houses have been damaged, several people, injured and others have lost their lives.
