Police had to use teargas to disperse an angry group of community members in Mwanza earlier today, who had stormed the district council to demand payment for their environmental restoration work under the Climate Smart Enhanced Public Works Program.
The protesters claimed they had not been paid the K28,800 they were promised after completing their work, despite two months having passed.
Mwanza district council’s public relations officer, stated that the council had assured the protesters that they would receive their dues once the collection, analysis, and management of their data was complete, using the Kobo toolbox software provided by the World Bank.
The World Bank has urged councils to switch to the software to manage beneficiary data and payments, replacing the previous practice of paying cash.
