President Chakwera has said he is saddened with what he has seen in various fields under Sunifolo Village, Senior Chief Kilupula in Karonga.

“There is no hope for rice production. The rains which are coming now are not helping because the dry spell really hit hard. There is no rice, groundnuts, and maize, even tobacco in some areas.

“Let me assure you that government will continue providing help. I heard Senior Chief Kilupula complain about lack of maize in Admarc depots. He says instead of bringing 6000 bags, they just bring about 2000, and people still struggle to access that. I want the Minister of Agriculture to ensure constant supply of maize in all Admarc depots,” he said.

The President has since called for speed in helping people.

“We need to stop wasting too much time on committees, but focus on helping people. We cannot be wasting time when people are suffering. Emergencies must be treated as such, not as normal scenarios.

“No one must think of benefiting from any help apart from those in need. I know the help will not be enough, that is why we need other means to ensure that we have enough all the time,” he added.

Chakwera has also emphasised on the need to strengthen irrigation systems.
