Parliamentary Committee on Agriculture, Friday visited Limbe Auction floors in Blantyre to appreciate the progress of the 2023 tobacco selling season.
Speaking after the tour, the committee’s chairperson, Sameer Suleman said they are satisfied with how the 2023 tobacco selling season has started, saying so far there are no serious challenges worthy pointing out.
Suleman said it is clear that Malawi is this year offering good prices for tobacco comparing to neighboring countries who previously used to be Malawi models.
Suleman said very shortly Tobacco Bill will be tabled in parliament as one way of ensuring that tobacco farming should be conducive and profitable.
Tobacco Commission Chief Executive Officer, Joseph Chidanti Malunga said the commission is doing all it can to make tobacco business successful in the country, by among others, bringing more buyers and changing some tobacco laws.
Malunga said on average, farmers are selling their tobacco over two dollars per kilogram and so far, there are no cases of rejection in all tobacco markets.
