Students of the Mzuzu University are taking to the streets of Mzuzu city this Friday.

According to the information sourced, the students are taking to the streets to deliver a petition to the CEO of Mzuzu city, Mr. Thomas Chirwa, on the unfair recruitment policies introduced by the Ministry of Education on the recruitment of teacher graduates.

Government this year introduced a new recruitment practice for graduate teachers which saw that instead of admitting teachers directly into the system, the graduate teachers are also supposed to undergo an interview. To this, the students feel it is unfair as they also undergo a teaching practice which is an interview in itself according to them.

Further to that, the students are complaining of another policy in which there is no automatic promotion for teachers who were teaching at Primary schools but have earned their degrees.

The students say that they tried to ask for a review of the policies from the government but there has been no response leaving them with no option but to take to the streets.
