Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) President Professor Peter Mutharika has denied media reports suggesting that he has been sponsoring some party officials to endorse him as presidential candidate for 2025 presidential elections.
Professor Mutharika, who is also former Malawian President, denied the accusation in an interview with Times Radio barely a day after DPP’s National Governing Council (NGC) endorsed him as the party’s torch bearer for 2025 Presidential elections.
According to Mutharika, the endorsement came as a surprise, as he was not aware that party’s NGC planned to endorse him during the meeting which took place at Nkopola Lodge in Mangochi district.
Mutharika’s endorsement was moved by DPP regional governor for the North Christopher Mzomera Ngwira and seconded by Blantyre City Central legislator Chipiliro Mpinganjira.
“Some media houses are reporting that I planned the endorsement; but the truth of the matter is that members voted; and I did not plan those endorsement, God is my witness,” said Professor Mutharika, a lawyer by professional.
Meanwhile, Mutharika has asked Malawians and party loyalists to remain calm saying he will address the nation on whether he will contest during the 2025 presidential elections or not.
