Reports indicate that 30 hectares of sugarcane, allegedly belonging to Salima Sugar Company, have been destroyed by a raging fire.

It is suspected that the fire may have been started by villagers from surrounding communities near the estate.

The loss of 30 hectares equates to approximately 30,000 metric tonnes of sugar, valued at around K1.4 billion based on the current price of K48,000 per tonne.

Meanwhile, Salima Sugar Company is yet to comment on the matter.
