Minister of Gender Community Development and Social Welfare Jean Sendeza has appealed to security agencies in the country to help the ministry to locate and arrest the man behind a video clip circulating on social media showing a heavily drunk child being asked to describe the taste of beer.
According to Sendeza the incident is criminal in nature and a human right issue that her ministry condemns at all cost.
She was speaking today during a visit to Machinga District to appreciate interventions made by the EU/UN funded project, spotlight initiative, aimed at eliminating violence against women and girls.
She said: “As a country we are going astray, this is not right for a human being to do that to such a young person, hence I am appealing to all security agencies to ensure that the man behind that clip has been brought to book.”
The minister commended the progress made by Spotlight initiative in the district as many gender-based violence survivors have been empowered to be self-reliant, which is in line with Malawi’s 2063 agenda.
On her part, United Nations resident coordinator, Rebecca Adda- Dontoh, said she was impressed with the strides made by the traditional leaders and their subjects saying it has portrayed a sense of ownership and commitment to end the malpractice in the district.
