Atleast 109 families in the Area of Traditional Authority Somba in Blantyre, have benefitted from the Orphan Support and Ultra Poor Graduation project initiated by Islamic Relief Worldwide Malawi, which seeks to bail families out of poverty.
Speaking on Tuesday in Blantyre, Islamic Relief Worldwide Malawi’s Ultra Poor Graduation Project Coordinator, Hajira Halilu said the project, which started in 2020 is offering support to orphaned children and less privileged groups.
“The 109 families that benefitted from this project, have each received K320,000. We have also made other provisions to carter for their day to day needs,” said Halilu.
One of the beneficiaries, Malita Alfred hailed the project for transforming lives of vulnerable people.
“Thanks to the money I received in 2022 through the project, I now own 13 goats which have been a great supplement to my vegetable farming. I am now able to fend for my family,” said Alfred.
In his remarks, Principal Social Welfare Officer responsible for Social Cash Transfer Programme in Blantyre, Kumbukeni Kauwa called upon the beneficiaries to invest in long-term economic activities that would sustain their livelihoods.
