As Malawians across the country are mourning the death of former Minister of Finance and Economic Development Goodall Gondwe, the family has come on the open to reveal the cause of his death.
Briefing mourners, Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) legislator Jappie Mhango who spoke on behalf of the family when President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera paid respect to the fallen economist said Gondwe had a back problem which has been troubling him in recent times.
According to Mhango, the back problem is what has contributed to the demise of the veteran politician.
In her eulogy on behalf of the President, Speaker of Parliament, Catherine Gotani Hara, said the Malawi leader is shocked by the death of Gondwe from whom he learnt a lot.
Hara said the late Gondwe used to advise President Chakwera on various issues of national importance when Dr Chakwera was Leader of Opposition in Parliament.
Gondwe was one of the finest economists the country produced. He once worked for the African Development Bank (ADB) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
He has died aged 87.
