The Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) has taken immediate action by shutting down the Mount Meru fuel service station in Blantyre for selling fuel to customers using jerry cans.
According to MERA spokesperson Fitina Khonje, complaints from customers on August 13 prompted this decision, and the station located in Nyambadwe will be permitted to resume operations after a 30-day period.
Khonje emphasized that the station’s reopening is contingent on its strict adherence to the regulations set by MERA.
She revealed that they have intensified collaboration with the Malawi Police Service to enforce the confiscation of jerry cans and fuel, as well as to arrest vendors and individuals engaged in unauthorized fuel trading.
