A tragic incident unfolded on Lake Malawi in Likoma when a 27-year-old man, Damiyano Pemphero, lost his life while attempting to retrieve a plastic basin that had been carried by strong winds to the Mozambican side of the lake.
The incident, which occurred on Monday, August 28, 2023, was confirmed by Likoma Police publicist Sergeant Enala Kaluwa.
Following the unfortunate event, a postmortem examination was conducted at St. Peter’s Mission Hospital in Likoma.
The results of the postmortem revealed that the cause of death was suffocation secondary to drowning.
As a result, the body of the deceased remains in the hospital’s mortuary as the community mourns this tragic loss.
Damiyano Pemphero was a resident of Mtenje Village in the area of Traditional Authority Mazengera in Lilongwe.
