In a significant stride towards enhancing the education sector’s contribution to human capital development and impact on national development, the Ministry of Education is convening its annual Education Joint Sector Review (JSR) Meeting on 11th and 12th October, 2023 at the Bingu International Convention Centre in Lilongwe.

The Ministry’s Public Relations Officer Mphatso Nkuonera says this year’s meeting will held under theme; “Transforming Education: Investing in Foundational Learning and Skills Development for a Wealthy, Self-Reliant, and Resilient Nation.”

He further explained, “The JSR is a collaborative initiative aimed at fostering dialogue, sharing insights, and catalysing action for the advancement of Malawi’s education sector. The Meeting will bring together key stakeholders, including Government officials and policymakers, representatives from educational institutions, development partners and agencies, members of the diplomatic corps, civil society organisations, and private sector leaders in education, to objectively assess the performance of the education sector, its priority programs and policies, and to collaboratively shape the trajectory of education in Malawi.”

According to Nkuonera, the primary objective of the JSR Meeting is to provide a platform for stakeholders to collectively reflect on the progress achieved thus far in the education sector, and to strategise for outstanding actions in alignment with the MW2063 national development strategy, specifically the First 10-Year Implementation Plan (MIP-1, 2021-2030), and the National Education Sector Investment Plan (NESIP, 2020-2030).

In July this year, the Ministry and its development partners marched from Kanengo to Magwero Primary School, symbolising long distances young learners especially in standards 1 to 4 travel to access education. The march was a curtain raiser for the Joint Sector Review meeting.
