Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) has saluted President Lazarus Chakwera for announcing what they call “action oriented measures”.

Chakwera on Wednesday evening highlighted a number of measures to protect Malawians from feeling the pintch of the 44 percent devaluation of the kwacha.

Among the measures, Chakwera canceled his all international trips and he also directed Minister of finance during budget review to consider hiking salaries of civil servants.

In a statement after the announcement, HRDC said “this is the leadership Malawians have been looking for”.

Added the statement: “The proposed cushion measures are comprehensive and what is key, however, is the implementation of the proposed measures. We know sometimes that it is easier said than done”.
