At least 23 people are in police custody following the fracas that ensued during and after anti-government demonstrations yesterday in Zomba.

Police spokesperson for eastern region superintendent Patrick Mussa said the suspects have been charged with conduct likely to cause breach of peace and inciting violence.

Mussa said the suspects will appear in court soon.

Mayhem erupted during the Bon Kalindo-led demonstrations after police arrested one of the demonstrators, which triggered an angry reaction, resulting in the massive use of tear gas, looting, and unconventional roadblocks.
