A 27-year-old suspected thief named Geoffrey Matewere died in Mangochi after being electrocuted on January 15, 2024.

Monkey-bay police station spokesperson Sergeant Alice Sichali reported that Matewere was attempting to steal after tampering with Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi Limited (ESCOM) wires at Nankhwali Catholic Parish.

Sergeant Sichali described the deceased as a habitual criminal with a history of theft.

The thief targeted the parish, tampering with the ESCOM main switch located outside the parish’s house.

The electrocution incident occurred as Matewere attempted to steal, leading to his death outside the bedroom window of one of the fathers.

“He was later found dead outside the bedroom window of one of the fathers,” explained Sichali.

The postmortem examination revealed that the cause of death was burned wounds from electricity.
