The Malawi Police Service has reiterated that they are still actively investigating the alleged abduction of human rights activist Sylvester Namiwa, which occurred in July 2022.

Peter Kalaya, the National Police spokesperson, emphasized that their investigations are ongoing and do not have a specific time limit. He assured the public that updates will be provided once the investigation is concluded.

Meanwhile, Michael Kaiyatsa, Vice Chairperson for the Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC), expressed concern over the delay in resolving Namiwa’s case, stating that it poses a risk to the safety of human rights activists in the country.

President Lazarus Chakwera has also weighed in on the matter, expressing his desire for the police to expedite the investigation and bring those responsible to justice.
