The Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has distanced itself from reports that one of its members has died after being hacked during the recent political violence that involved followers of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and unidentified people in Lilongwe last week.

Social media has been awash with reports that the alleged MCP supporter has died while receiving treatment after leading a gang of youths that attacked the DPP followers who were to hold a blue parade in the capital city.

Responding to the matter, MCP spokesperson Ezekiel Ching’oma has labelled the reports as fake, as they have only learned about them via social media, adding that none of their followers were involved in the fracas and that police are investigating.

In a recent statement, police spokesperson Peter Kalaya condemned the fracas but indicated they had instituted investigations to arrest those responsible.
