The Malawi Electoral Commission has barred two candidates from Leadership with Compassion Party from standing in the forthcoming by-elections in Karonga on the basis that their party is not yet registered with the Registrar of Political Parties.

MEC Commissioner Francis Kasaila disclosed this in Karonga today during an engagement with members of the Multiparty Liaison Committee saying apart from the candidates, the electoral body has also suspended thirty three (33) officers for allegedly violating electoral laws.

Kasaila while indicating that the officers have been punished for registering voters using registration slips explained that the Commission has taken tough decisions as one way of ensuring that it delivers credible polls.

Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) District Governor for Karonga, Makenzie Malema has hailed the electoral management body for being transparent in handling the electoral process.

Meanwhile, a total of 68,461 eligible voters are expected to cast their ballot in the forthcoming local government by-elections in Kaporo, Chilanga and Rukuru wards on 26 this month.
