Minister of Agriculture Sam Kawale has challenged small scale farmers to cultivate macadamia as the government is considering establishing mega farms that will focus on production of the crop.

Kawale said the government need to add value to all export products to grow the economy.

He said this on Wednesday when he inspected one of the macadamia mega farms at Gala Macs Company Limited at Namitete in Lilongwe.

“The relationship that the government and the business sector has is crucial to finding lasting solutions to economic challenges which the country is experiencing. The vision is to collaborate with various players to create a sustainable future for,” Kawale said.

Gala Macs Company Limited Country Executive Officer Christo Bothma asked the government to provide a ready market to macadamia small-scale farmers to close the marketing gap.

Bothma concluded that most of the challenges they face most of the times is when their want to export their products. Their need the government to come in, especially when their want to export to china.

Malawi is the third largest exporter of macadamia nuts in Africa after South Africa and Kennya, and the seventh globally.
