President Dr Lazarus Chakwera is in Mulanje presiding over the cyclone Freddy memorial service at Mulanje stadium.

The ceremony is being held under the theme “A resilient Nation Towards Recovery”.

The memorial service is being conducted few days after the President declared a state of Disaster.

Almost 23 district affected by El Nino and Floods, putting many people at risk of hunger, extensive damage to life, property and derails development.

The president encourages unity and hope during the disasters, advocacy for climate change mitigation, disaster risk financing and protecting economic gains from external shocks as climate change results in extensive damages to life, property and derails development.

According to the Department of Disaster Management (DODMA), cyclone Freddy affected over 2.2 million people in 16 local authorities, displaced 650,000, leaving 679 dead and 537 missing, with the post Disaster needs Assessment estimating total damages and losses 506. 7 million US dollars with the total of 680.4 million US dollars.
