Police at Mpingu in Lilongwe, have arrested two men and recovered a pistol, eight live ammunition, while another is on the run, for being found in possession weapons without a license at the trading centre on April 26, 2024.

Spokesperson for Lilongwe Police Hastings Chigalu has identified the suspects as as Godfrey Mbewe, 25, and Sackson Mbewe, 29, (brothers). The runaway suspect is yet to be identified.

According to Chigalu, detectives, working on a tip-off from well-wishers learnt that at a certain drinking joint at Mpingu Trading Centre, three suspects were offering for sale a pistol and ammunition at K1.5 million price.

After a follow-up at around 23:00 hours, law enforcers arrested two suspects and recovered eight ammunition. However, one suspect managed to escape the scene while in possession of a pistol.

A further follow-up of the runaway suspect, found out that he went straight to his house at M’bwatalika, where he left the pistol before disappearing. Police recovered the pistol.

Investigations have established that Sackson Mbewe, bought the pistol and ammunition in South Africa, where he has been staying for the past ten years.

Meanwhile, manhunt is underway to arrest the runaway suspect.

Both Godfrey and Sackson Mbewe hail from Mwadzama Village, Traditional Authority Khombedza in Salima District.
