Police at Jenda in Mzimba have apprehended a 49-year-old man, Albert Nyirenda on suspicion that he was found in possession of a firearm (Muzzle loader) without permit inside his house at Ehehleni in the district.

The arrest follows an intelligence driven operation conducted by the Station on April 26, 2024 after being tipped off that Nyirenda was keeping the alleged weapon. During the arrest, he was also found to have cultivated four trees of Indian hemp without a licence.

In a related operation, Police have also arrested Stephano James 27, and Danniel Nkhata 45 for committing various crimes at Jenda.

Stephano James is suspected to have broken into a Mosque at Jenda during the night of 24-25 April and went away with a mat valued at K300,000, while Nkhata was found in possession of Indian hemp weighing 500 grams without a licence.

The mat stolen from the Mosque has been recovered from where it was sold, the firearm (Muzzle loader) has been ceased for further investigations whilst all the hemp ceased during the operation will be sent to authorities for analysis.

All suspects will appear before court after the completion of investigations.

Jenda police station warns members of the community that it is an offence to possess a firearm without a permit, further it is also an offence to cultivate or possess Indian hemp without a licence.
