Health workers in the country have made a u-turn in their proposal of holding a nation-wide strike which was planned to start today.

The suspension has come after they had a round-table discussion with the minister of health, Honorable Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda on 30th April 2024.

According to the statement released by National Organization of Nurses and Mid-wives of Malawi (NONM) Vice President Hannah Mtemang’ombe indicates that the minister asked the meet up with the leaders of healthcare workers to discuss over their planned demonstrations.

In the statement, Mtemang’ombe said the minister has committed to come with the solutions to the problems.

However the NOMN and PAUM has given the government 14 days to come up with the answers to the revised allowances.

Health care workers said the government failed to fulfill the commitment to increase their allowances besides agreeing the salary increment of 15 percent, they promised to increase several allowances like, locum rates, risk or medical allowances and government top up and professional allowances.
