Britain has handed over a 6.8 billion kwacha humanitarian aid to Malawi in support of the hunger situation in the country.

Fiona Ritchie who is the British High Commissioner to Malawi said 3,000 metric tons of maize flour will be purchased for at least 300,000 households in the areas that have been hit by the elnino-induced hunger.

“Government acknowledges that the past years have been a difficult season for Malawi, and has since appealed to well-wishers to assist in what she described as a value for money time” said Ritchie.

Commissioner for Disaster Management Affairs Charles Kalemba said that he aid will also be distributed in monetary form to some selected areas, as the country is experiencing an extended lean season.

The British Governments aid follows Malawi’s call for assistance towards 9 million Malawians, representing 45 percent of the elnino weather condition that struck even before the country recovered from cyclones Freddy, Anna and Gombe.
