Police in Lilongwe at area 3 have arrested a 32-year-old man for allegedly posing as a National Intelligence Service (NIS) officer, and soliciting money, from various individuals on the pretext that he will recruit them as NIS officers.

Posing as an employee of the National Intelligence Services, on May 19, 2024 the suspect persuaded, and collected K200 thousand from two individuals at White Falls in Area 1, promising them employment at the NIS.

Before the suspect could leave the place, detectives arrived and arrested him after being tipped off by well-wishers.

The police have also recovered the money that the suspect collected from the two victims.

Preliminary investigations have established that the suspect, has for a long time been hiding behind NIS identity, to collect money  from individuals promising to offer them jobs at the Intelligence department, though he is not an employee of the same.

Police in Lilongwe is advising residents to always be cautious when approached by con men like the suspect, and never hesitate to report them to police for legal action.

The suspect will appear in court soon to face two counts of, personating a Person Employed in the Public Service, and Obtaining Money by False Pretenses.

The suspect has been identified as Kennedy Jesias ,comes from Njiwa Village, Traditional Authority Mabvwere in Mchinji District.
