Local Contractors trading under the banner ‘Concerned Indigenous Contractors’ have shifted the demonstrations slated for today in the capital Lilongwe to Thursday, May 23, 2024.
The disgruntled contractors organized the demonstrations today with an aim of forcing the Roads Fund Administration (RFA) to pay them their money amounting to MK14 billion.
It is said that the local contractors successfully finished the construction of government roads in August last years but the RFA is yet to pay them.
The local contractors wanted to hold demonstrations from Mbowe Filling Station to RFA officers where they were scheduled to deliver their petition to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) but the law enforcers blocked the demonstrations.
The Malawi Police Service (MPS) blocked the demonstrations on grounds that the local contractors did not obtain a clearance from the District Commissioner’s office in Lilongwe and from the Inspector General of Police.
The local contractors have since notified the DCs office of the impending demonstrations this coming Thursday.
